Why York?
About City of York Council, the 2025 hosts...
This two-day conference is an excellent opportunity to discover the impact of transformational change in a people-friendly city.
There will be a warm and exciting welcome from York, for experts and change-makers from across the UK and beyond.
It will be a great opportunity to share ideas, experiences and practical examples of building or re-purposing streets and neighbourhoods for people, not just cars.
"York currently sits in the top ten of local authorities where residents cycle at least once a week. But we see that as just the start. Our city centre, suburbs and rural villages are growing and our residents and businesses have told us loud and clear that they want – and need – better ways to travel.
We know that up to now, the rhythm of residents’ lives has been dictated by the clogged- up roads that dominate our city. With our new Local Transport Strategy, supported by an Implementation Plan and Movement and Place Plan, we have a new, more fundamental understanding that delivering good transport is not simply about getting people from A to B; it’s about what happens along the way.
Active City 2025 comes at a perfect time for us here in York, and I look forward to sharing our work as we embark in an ambitious new direction, making space for walking, wheeling and cycling and providing a more accessible, affordable and healthier city for the people who visit, live, work and study here"
Cllr Kate Ravilious, Executive Member for TransportCity of York Council

The conference takes place at the York Barbican
In partnership with Active Travel England
Active Travel England (ATE) is an executive agency, sponsored by the Department for Transport. Led by National Active Travel Commissioner, Chris Boardman CBE, ATE’s mission is to increase the number of people walking, wheeling and cycling as part of their everyday trips.

"My ambition is to make walking, cycling and wheeling a key part of our region’s transport network. We want to make it easier for people to choose active travel for both work and leisure journeys. It’s about improving physical and mental health, supporting local growth, and creating a healthier environment where people can travel freely"
Mayor of York and North Yorkshire David Skaith
